Mens 1 Get Back To Winning Ways
Brunswick Mens 1 returned to winning ways with avengence against Wingfield.
After the poor performance in the loss against Mosborough and knowing prior to the game that another defeat would see their title hopes vanish, Brunswick Mens 1 put in the performance of the season so far to beat one of the pre-season favourites. With 100% records for Steve Parry, Rob Oadley, Glenn Coburn and Mark Needham and an additional victory from Ben Collins and Donn Thomkinson the men secured a convincing 7 - 2 victory.
With two games remaining a 25th league title is still in their own hands.

Comb B v Comb A
Brunswick Combined A overcame a spirited challenge form the second team in last nights match at the EIS. Whilst the final score suggested an easy victory for the A team it was anything but that with some well contested 3 end rubbers in the middle part of the match which went the way of Brunswick A.
Mark Needham and Ben Collins secured the only rubber for the B team with a narrow 21-19 third end victory in the top men’s doubles. Nicki Chan-Lam and Fayaz Ladak made fine season debuts for Combined B.
Brunswick v CSR Sunday 4th December 2011
Arriving at Abbeydale last Sunday and seeing CSR’s men’s line up with a Lancashire and Yorkshire Champion from this years events making up their number they believed that the advantage was with them; however our Men hadn’t read the script and delivered a resounding 5 – 0 victory in that part of the match. Alex Marritt lead the line well with a strong singles victory against Lancashire’s leading player Tom Monk then teaming up with Rob Oadley taking both doubles. Our ladies equally acquitted themselves well winning 4 – 1. A 9 – 1 winning lead going into the mixed soon became 12 – 2 and all 4 points to Brunswick.
3 wins from 3 matches and 12 points has been a solid start to the season.
Brunswick v East Leeds Sunday 27th November 2011
Steve Chappell and Elaine Kidger made their season debuts in this match and acquitted themselves well. Steve begging to play the singles came through in 2 straight games against a game young Seb Johnson and the ever green Tracy Parker overcoming her younger opponent 21-12 21-19. In a difficult hall with visibility of the shuttle being poor the team came through a valiant challenge from East Leeds with a solid 11 – 3 victory.

Mens 2 Overcome Spirited Mens 3
On Wednesday 23 November Brunswick Mens 2 took on Brunswick Mens 3. The match was both completive and spirited as both sides showed determination to win the internal clash.
Brunswick Mens 2 came out victorious in the end with a convincing 9 – 0 win, although there were some close games in the match. Third win for the season so Mens 2 are off to a great start this year especially considering they have already beaten, what is on paper the other strongest team in the league. Next match for Mens 2 is at home against Dalesman on the 30th November.

Brunswick’s Men Clinch Division 1 Title
Brunswick Men’s first team once again secured top honours in the Sheffield and District Men’s Division 1 league. In what was an incredibly tough league the team deservedly lifted the title for the 24th consecutive season since the inauguration of the Men’s Feathers League in the 1987/88 season. Mark Needham team captain reflected by saying “this is probably the most challenging and hardest fought league title I can remember; the standard of the division is incredible and probably the best since I’ve been playing in the league; I would even go as far to say that the Sheffield Men’s League is now the best in the North of England.”
The Team won the title by going through the entire season without losing a match. Mark went on to say “the success the team enjoyed was very much down to playing a consistent team for most of the year, great team spirit and the fact that every pairing contributed positively to the team’s results”

BE Cup Finals 2011 – Milton Keynes 11th and 12th June 2011
For the fourth consecutive season the club won its way through to compete in the Badminton England Cup Finals in Milton Keynes; the blue ribbon club competition nationally.
The Finals consisted of two groups of four teams who played each other in a round robin sequence; this year we were drawn with Wimbledon (Surrey), Barnt Green (Worcestershire) and Loughborough Students (Leicestershire).
We played Barnt Green on Saturday morning making an impressive 9-0 winning start; however the afternoon proved to be much more difficult eventually losing to Wimbledon 7-2. We had 3 narrow loses in this match with Alex Marritt in his singles going down 22-20 in the third end; Glenn Coburn and Alex losing to 18 in third and Nicola Smith and Glenn losing to 18 in the third. (Wimbledon went on to contest the final eventually losing to Eltham Green from Kent).
Sunday morning saw us play Loughborough Students; from a 3-0 leading start we ended up losing the match 5-4 and therefore in to the play-off for 5th and 6th against Solihull & Shirley (Warwickshire).
A 2-0 lead after the singles became 2-1 with an ankle injury to Steve Parry playing with Robert Oadley in the top doubles which saw Steve take no further part in the match. Steve had been the 100% man showing fine form for an almost quinquagenerian up to that point winning his previous 6 rubbers. The ladies doubles were split; match score 3-2. Mark Needham having made the 4,000 mile journey across the Atlantic a day late and over coming jet lag and no sleep teamed up with Glenn to take the 2nd men’s doubles; 4-2. We won 2 of the 3 mixed and therefore 5th place was secured with a 6-3 win and a £300 cheque for the club.
Overall the standard of competition is clearly getting harder and most certainly the quality and intensity in individual games is as high as ever; the average age of the Brunswick team was 36. It was a solid and determined performance from all team members and I would like to thank each of them for their endeavour, enthusiasm and commitment over the weekend.
